Does Massage Really Help back pain?

Posted on Saturday, May 31, 2014 3:16 PM

People who are skeptical about massage want to know, "Does Massage REALLY HELP back pain?" Well.... keep reading this Blog because we have some news for you.

According to a 2011 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine

titled: "A Comparison of Massage Therapy and Usual Medical Care for Chronic Low Back Pain" researchers concluded that "Participants who received massage had less pain and were better able to perform daily activities after 10 weeks than those who received usual care."

The purpose of the study was, "To compare the short-term and long-term effects of relaxation massage, structural massage, and usual care for people with persisting low back pain."

These results tell us that massage is a Proven treatment for back pain.

During massage, the therapist uses their hands to perform various techniques to the skin and muscles. Some of the main techniques used during a massage are Stroking, Compression's, Friction, Vibration and Kneading. These forms of touch send a message to the brain to release the bodies "feel good" hormones which are Dopamine, Serotonin and Oxytocin. As a result, this promotes a state of relaxation for our mind and body.

Additional benefits of massage include: Increased Circulation which allows our blood flow to deliver oxygen and nutrients. As the therapist massages the body while determining the appropriate touch level and techniques to use, this helps muscles eliminate waste products, such as lactic acid that may collect in muscles from spasms, causing pain.

Stretching

Posted on Monday, February 24, 2014 7:01 AM

Few realize the importance of STRETCHING and fail to include it as part of their Daily Exercise. Stretching is known to increase flexibility, increase range of motion in joints, improve circulation, improve posture, relieve stress and prevent injuries.

With all of these benefits, it's important to stretch before and after a work-out.

Here are a few stretching 101 basics for you to remember:

  • Target Major Muscle Groups: When you're stretching, focus on your calves, thighs, hips, lower back, neck and shoulders. Also, stretch muscles that you regularly use during everyday activities.
  • Warm-up First: Stretching muscles when they're cold increases your risk of injury. Warm-up by walking or doing a favorite activity at LOW intensity for 5-minutes.
  • Hold Each Stretch for At Least 30 Seconds: Stretch muscles safely by holding your stretches for 30-60 seconds. Then repeat the stretch on the other side.
  • Don't BOUNCE: Bouncing as you stretch can cause small tears in the muscle.
  • Focus on a Pain-Free stretch: Expect to feel tension while you're stretching. If it hurts, you've gone TOO FAR. Back off to the point where you don't feel any pain, then hold the stretch.
  • Relax and Breathe Freely: DON'T hold your breath while you're stretching.
  • Exercise Caution: If you have a chronic condition or an injury, speak to your Doctor or Nurse BEFORE exercising.

Questions to ask before getting a massage

Posted on Thursday, February 20, 2014 6:54 PM

Recently in the State of Michigan, a requirement has been made that ALL Massage therapists obtain a State License ( Just like a Doctor, Physical Therapist, Hair Stylist etc) in order to legally provide professional services. So, with this requirement in effect, it is paramount that you ask "Do the Therapists have State licenses to practice massage?" This assures that you will have a quality, trained professional giving you a massage.

In addition, here is a listing of pertinent questions to ask BEFORE scheduling a massage appointment:

  1. How long have the therapists been practicing massage?
  2. Do you have client testimonials from your therapists that are available to read?
  3. Do your therapists carry liability insurance?
  4. Have your therapists taken any extra courses since graduation?

As a customer, you have the right to ask. Do not feel intimidated and if this information can't honestly be provided to you then you may want to re-consider the professionalism and quality of massage you will be spending your hard-earned money on.

Good Luck. And remember that not all massage therapists are the same. I would suggest that you Do your research and ask questions before blindly walking into a massage place..... That could result in wasted money and a disappointing massage experience. Word-of-mouth referrals are valuable and/or high-quality massage testimonials from websites across the internet.
